We are parents and family members of transgender young people in Alberta. We are calling on Premier Smith to restore the rights of trans kids. 

As parents, we want nothing more than to raise happy and healthy kids, kids who are safe, free, and thriving. Now, imagine if your government had stripped away your kids’ rights. Imagine if she had passed policies making their lives harder. That’s exactly what’s happened to parents of trans youth in Alberta.

That’s why, on March 30th, ten parents of trans youth from across Alberta, representing thousands of other families across Alberta, gathered at the Provincial Legislature in Edmonton with two powerful demands.

First, they demanded the restoration of their children’s charter-protected rights, and second, they demanded a meeting with Premier Danielle Smith.

Their hope? That the Premier would meet with them and hear their stories. That she would listen, as they described the hardship their families and their kids have gone through since the Premier suspended charter-rights for their kids, banned healthcare their children need, and contributed to a climate where their kids are less safe and less free than other kids. They hoped, perhaps naively, and definitely desperately, that if the premier heard their stories, she would reconsider the policies harming their families.

Their request was echoed in the Alberta legislature by MLA Janis Irwin. The premier refused to reply, refused to consider the request. This premier – who has framed herself as “pro parent” refuses to meet with concerned parents. Now, these parents are asking for your help. If parents across Alberta speak up and call on the premier to meet with these ten parents, we can make her change her mind.
